Imphal: The All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) gathered at the Martyrs Memorial Park in Kapaam village on June 19 to observe the 13th annual Martyrs Remembrance Day. The event honored nine individuals who dedicated their lives to the rights and aspirations of the Naga people, featuring a formal flag unfurling, a gun salute, and a wreath-laying ceremony.
ANSAM president Th. Angteshang Maring led the tributes, acknowledging the enduring impact of the nine fallen individuals, including Shelley Chara, Ashun R. Jangvei, and Ng. Sanii. Reflecting on contemporary volatility, Maring addressed recent losses of life in regions such as Leilon Vaiphei and TM Khullen. He stated, "The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals who dedicated their lives to the aspirations and rights of the Naga people."
The event drew a broad coalition of stakeholders, including representatives from the Naga Students Federation, the Naga Womens Union, and the Global Naga Forum. Speakers emphasized that despite years of political negotiations, a final resolution remains out of reach. Leaders urged the younger generation to treat the geographic dispersion of the Naga people as a source of strength rather than division.
The observance concluded with prayers and songs, reinforcing a collective commitment to peace and justice. Participants echoed calls for impartial legal processes regarding recent violence and urged for sustained solidarity to overcome ongoing social and political challenges.
