Guwahati: Air India is set to launch direct flights connecting Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi starting August 4. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the expansion on Monday, marking a major milestone in the state’s effort to transform Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport into a prominent regional aviation hub.

These new routes bring the total number of countries with direct air links to Guwahati to four, joining existing services to Thailand, Singapore, and Bhutan. Sharing the news on X, the Chief Minister stated, "Opening new avenues to connect Assam to the global community! Just days after EU member states lifted their travel advisory for Assam, I am happy to share that from 4th August, @airindia will commence direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi."

Sarma indicated that the government is already looking toward further expansion, noting that his next goal is to establish direct air services to Vietnam. This latest development follows the recent decision by European Union member states to remove restrictive travel advisories regarding Assam, a move Sarma described as a boost for tourism and international business ties. The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the European Union Delegation and Ambassador Hervé Delphin for their support in facilitating these improved global connections.
