Itanagar: A multi-agency team pulled four men to safety on Monday after they spent a cold night trapped on islands in the swollen Sisiri River. Heavy rains forced the group to wait out the storm near Dambuk in Arunachal Pradesh.
Geram Lego, Abom Tayeng, Maksam Pertin, and Mitom Borang went to the river on Sunday to fish. The water rose quickly and cut them off from the shore. Poor weather conditions grounded rescue attempts that night. The men stayed put on the islands until dawn broke.
The National Disaster Response Force, the Indian Air Force, local rafting team Zaktum Notko, and domestic elephants combined efforts for the extraction. Rescuers successfully airlifted all four men from the area on Monday morning. Dambuk MLA Puinnyo Apum oversaw the operation.
Apum praised the groups for their persistence. "Following a gruelling round-the-clock rescue operation, all four individuals have been safely evacuated and reunited with their families. The successful outcome was made possible by the bravery and determination of all the teams involved," he said.
The legislator warned locals to avoid rivers during the monsoon. Heavy rain makes the water unpredictable. Stay out of the river when storms roll in.
