Agartala: Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar met with city traders Friday to start a total overhaul of the congested Battala Market. He wants to turn the site into a modern hub for commerce. The plan aims to fix gridlock and upgrade aging facilities for shoppers and sellers alike.
The meeting at the Agartala Municipal Corporation hall included Commissioner Saju Wahid, corporators Nitu Dey and Jahnabi Das Choudhury, and former BJP state president Manoj Kanti Debroy. Majumdar promised that after Battala, the city will move to fix Durga Chowmuhani Market, Lake Chowmuhani Market, and Border Golchakkar Market. Crews are already working on the fish section at Maharajganj Market, with more upgrades coming for that entire area soon.
Officials said the project fixes traffic jams, adds better facilities, and creates a cleaner space. "This ambitious plan signals Agartala’s broader vision of reshaping its traditional markets into modern civic spaces that balance heritage with functionality, ensuring that commerce thrives alongside urban order," Majumdar said. Traders backed the move, hoping the work finally solves years of chaos and poor infrastructure.
