Kohima: The Kohima district administration has confirmed an outbreak of African Swine Fever at Thizama village. Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem issued the order following positive test results from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
Officials have established an infected zone within a one-kilometer radius of the outbreak site, along with a surveillance zone covering a ten-kilometer radius. To prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus, the district has enforced a total ban on the import, export, and movement of live pigs and pork products within these areas. All butchery shops and meat markets in the affected zones must remain closed until further notice.
The administration has provided clear instructions for local farmers to manage the crisis. Owners must sanitize their premises daily, restrict visitor access, and monitor their livestock for signs of illness. The order specifies that "carcasses of infected or suspected animals must be disposed of through safe burial in accordance with official protocols." Dumping carcasses in open spaces or water bodies is strictly forbidden.
Any suspicious deaths or unusual mortality rates among pigs must be reported to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services immediately. The Deputy Commissioner warned that individuals who violate these containment measures will face legal action under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009.
