Activists Demand Better Care for Maimed Elephant in Assam

Guwahati: Activists are demanding the Digboi Forest Division transfer an injured domestic elephant named Mangal Singh to Kaziranga. The animal suffered a horrific attack on April 14 in the Lakhipathar Reserve Forest. Unidentified suspects hacked off both of the elephant's tusks while it was still alive. Four months have passed, but police have yet to arrest the primary perpetrators.

Mangal Singh currently sits in Ketetong Hospital. A veterinary team led by Dr. Nayanjyoti Bordoloi and Dr. Arindam Pachoni from Margherita Veterinary Hospital oversees its care. These doctors recommended moving the elephant to Kaziranga for advanced medical intervention. Samiran Hatimuria, a member of Aranyam Animal Care and Plan Pizar Veshvan Center, claims the transfer remains blocked. He stated, "Let Mangal Singh live" while calling out the inaction of the local authorities.

Hatimuria represents the elephant's owner, Sanjay Dwarah. Financial strain forced Dwarah to hand over care duties, as he can no longer cover the mounting medical bills. Hatimuria blames Digboi DFO Rohini Kumar Das for withholding the essential permission needed to move the animal. The Forest Department has remained silent on the matter, failing to respond to repeated requests for comment. Activists want the department to act now before it is too late for the tusker.
