Guwahati: A cold storage facility in the Rongagarh area of Assam's Nagaon district has become a symbol of wasted public investment. Constructed in 2011 for several crores of rupees, the project aimed to help regional farmers preserve their harvest. More than a decade later, the site remains completely non-operational.
The lack of oversight has left the facility in a state of decay. The complex is currently overgrown with weeds and local residents report that the site has become a hub for anti-social activities. This neglect contrasts sharply with the struggles of the farming community, which continues to lose large quantities of fruits and vegetables to spoilage due to the extreme heat and a lack of proper infrastructure.
Frustrated by the situation, locals are calling on the state government to intervene. They argue that the facility must be made functional to prevent further agricultural losses. One resident stated, "The prolonged delay has resulted in the deterioration of infrastructure and equipment inside the complex." Farmers maintain that activating the unit is a necessary step to support their livelihoods and justify the significant funds already spent on the project.
