Guwahati: Fifty-eight people landed in the Assam Medical College and Hospital this week. They suffered from suspected food poisoning following a religious event in Jonai. The victims attended a Nam-Kirtan birthday celebration on June 30. They ate prasad including moong, gram, bundiya, bhujiya, and fruit.

No one felt sick at the event. Symptoms started 12 hours later. Attendees began suffering from severe vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain on July 1. Local doctors at the Jonai Primary Health Centre could not handle the rush. They sent the sick to Dibrugarh for specialized care.

Ambulances hauled the group to AMCH on July 2. Hospital staff reported that "all the patients are under medical observation and are in stable condition." Thankfully, there are no deaths. The district administration and Health Department are now running an investigation. Officials plan to test food samples to pin down exactly what caused the mass illness.
