Zunheboto KVK Expands Sustainable Farming Campaign to Reach Local Farmers

Kohima: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Zunheboto, operating under Nagaland University, is currently scaling up its Khet Bachao Abhiyan, or Save the Farm Campaign. This month-long effort aims to equip farmers with sustainable agricultural techniques and climate-resilient technologies across the Zunheboto district.

KVK teams are teaching local farmers essential skills in water conservation, soil health management, and integrated nutrient management. The initiative specifically promotes organic and natural farming methods while discouraging the heavy use of chemical fertilisers. To date, the project has reached more than 1,800 farmers across 16 villages through field demonstrations and community meetings.

Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Zunheboto, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, emphasized the importance of the outreach during a recent Sarpanch Sammelan. He noted, "The Khet Bachao Abhiyan is a collective call to action for farmers, village institutions and youth to safeguard agriculture and ensure long-term food security. The future of rural prosperity lies in sustainable and profitable farming systems supported by scientific knowledge and community participation."

This campaign is part of a broader national effort under the Indian government, running from June 1 to June 30 under the theme of Healthy Soil, Healthy Crop, Prosperous Farmer. Beyond training, the KVK has distributed bio-pesticides, bio-fertilisers, and fruit saplings to support local producers. The programme relies on a coordinated network of agricultural universities and government departments to improve long-term soil fertility and agricultural productivity nationwide.
