WWF Conference in Jaipur Spotlights India's Rhino and Buffalo Conservation

Guwahati: Assam Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah cheered the focus on one-horned rhinoceros and wild water buffalo conservation at the WWF Global Conservation Conference in Jaipur. The event kicked off on Monday, September 21. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav opened the session. He emphasized India's work protecting grassland species and pushed for better global cooperation involving local communities.

Representatives from over 100 countries attended the meeting. Yadav touted India's success with tigers, elephants, dolphins, lions, and snow leopards. He specifically pointed to the Great Indian Bustard breeding program in Rajasthan and sacred grove protections as benchmarks for the rest of the world. The minister argued for stronger scientific research to secure wildlife corridors and improve habitats.

Mallabaruah took to social media to praise the national focus. He linked the survival of these herbivores to the health of Assam's wetlands and grasslands. "For Assam, these magnificent species are an integral part of our natural heritage and the grassland and wetland ecosystems we are committed to protecting," Mallabaruah said. He noted that the state continues to push for habitat security, anti-poaching tactics, and community engagement under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
