Guwahati: A wild elephant died Saturday near the Abhaypur Reserve Forest in Assam’s Charaideo district. The animal’s carcass surfaced at the edge of the woods after it allegedly wandered out looking for food. Locals and wildlife officials remain baffled by the incident. The cause of death is not yet clear.
Personnel from the Sonari Police Station and the Forest Department arrived shortly after the discovery. They secured the site and collected preliminary evidence. A veterinary team will perform a post-mortem to determine why the animal perished. Officials have not ruled out poisoning, electrocution, or human-wildlife conflict.
"The exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the forensic and post-mortem reports are available," a forest official stated. The area has seen regular elephant movement for years. Shrinking natural resources and habitat loss frequently drive these animals into populated regions. Forest authorities pledged a full investigation and vowed to pursue legal action if they find signs of foul play.
