Shillong: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) scheduled a march to the Main Secretariat on August 6. The party demands action on 10 pressing issues currently ignored by the state government. VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit confirmed the protest following a meeting of the State Executive Committee.
Protesters will walk to the building to demand accountability. Basaiawmoit expects the Chief Minister and his Cabinet to show up and hear the public. He stressed the event will stay civil. "The march to the Secretariat is intended to send a strong message to the government regarding the growing resentment among the people," Basaiawmoit said.
The VPP listed several grievances. They want a white paper on the Lumpongdeng Island project due to missing transparency. They also demand the scrapping of recent recruitment cycles handled by District Selection Committees and the Meghalaya Public Service Commission. Basaiawmoit claims evidence shows underqualified candidates were shortlisted for interviews.
The party maintains its opposition to new cement and coke plants. They are pushing for an end to hiring retired government workers, tighter controls on illegal immigration, and better protections for community lands. They also want to pull teachers away from election and census duties to keep them in classrooms.
Economic stability remains a major pillar of their protest. The VPP wants legal frameworks to help families hit by coal mining restrictions. Basaiawmoit asked youth and women to join the march to voice their frustrations. The party warned that if the government ignores this message, they will escalate their agitation.
