Kohima: Around a hundred volunteers gathered at Pulie Badze on May 22 to participate in a large-scale clean-up initiative. The event marked International Biodiversity Day under the theme Acting Locally For Global Impact, with participants representing various church youth groups and the Kohima Municipal Council.
Organized by the group LEAF and the Social Concerns Department of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council, the effort was held in partnership with the Jotsoma Village Council. The day began at Chaheki, where organizers explained that LEAF aims to unite young people in protecting the local land, heritage, and identity. Speakers at the event emphasized that environmental conservation is both a spiritual and social duty, encouraging the community to take collective responsibility for the ecosystem.
The village secretary, Penyüsielie Suokhrie, shared the history of Pulie Badze, which takes its name from an ancient resident of the area. Among those who climbed the mountain to assist were two octogenarians who joined the youth to demonstrate their commitment to preserving the region's heritage. The organizers thanked all participants and local authorities for providing the necessary support, including waste management equipment.
The clean-up concluded with a call for residents to maintain these efforts in their own neighborhoods and towns. By focusing on local action, the groups hope to reinforce the necessity of protecting biodiversity for the long term.
