Voice of the People Party campaigns on small public donations

Shillong: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) is challenging conventional political spending in Meghalaya by relying on small, spontaneous public donations for its Shillong Lok Sabha by-election campaign. Supporters across the Khasi-Jaintia region are contributing everything from loose coins to larger currency notes to support the party’s electoral efforts.

During a recent meeting in Sohra, the party collected over Rs 22,000, with the funds gathered and counted in full view of the public. Supporters including farmers, students, and daily wage earners frequently step forward to offer contributions, which party leaders describe as a vital grassroots investment in their political movement.

The by-election was triggered by the death of MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon, whose victory in 2024 established the VPP as a major political force. The party has now fielded academician Batskhem Myrboh, who focuses his campaign on governance, accountability, and the promotion of clean politics.

While traditional campaigns in Meghalaya are often viewed as expensive and reliant on wealthy donors, the VPP uses these collections to reduce financial dependency and reinforce its commitment to transparency. Observers note that while crowdfunding is common in many global democracies, it remains an unusual practice within the local political landscape.

Party leaders argue that every contribution serves as a symbolic endorsement of their message. By shunning large-scale corporate funding in favor of small public donations, the VPP aims to demonstrate its dedication to an alternative, grassroots-driven approach to governance.
