Kohima: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has committed central support to upgrade the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research into a super-specialty facility. During a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, the minister also endorsed plans for a new Greenfield Medical College in the Chumoukedima district.
Nagaland Health Minister P. Paiwang Konyak presented a comprehensive roadmap to improve the state's healthcare capacity. His proposal includes launching postgraduate courses at the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research by 2028 to combat the ongoing shortage of specialist physicians.
Beyond these primary upgrades, Konyak requested central funding for several other critical projects. These include the establishment of an AIIMS-like institution in Chumoukedima, a dedicated State Cancer Institute, and transforming the State Mental Health Institute into a Centre of Excellence. He also advocated for a new State Allied Health Professional Institute in Kohima.
To bolster emergency care, the state government proposed building accident and trauma centres across the 12 remaining districts. Konyak also emphasized the need to continue the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission scheme to maintain momentum on local healthcare development.
