Imphal: The Ukhrul District Working Journalists Association marked World Environment Day 2026 with a collaborative event at the Phungyo Baptist Church Quasquicentennial Hall. Held under the international theme Now For Climate, the gathering united government officials, environmentalists, and church leaders to promote collective responsibility for the local ecosystem.
The event was organized alongside the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, the Ukhrul District Administration, and the Divisional Forest Office. During the proceedings, speakers linked environmental health to the survival of the community. Chief Medical Officer Dr. A.S. Kapangring emphasized that natural resources form the foundation of public health, stating, "Access to clean water, hygienic surroundings, fresh air, and organic food are the building blocks of a healthy society."
Sub Divisional Officer Dinringam Kamei addressed the attendees on the responsibility of stewardship. He called for the end of illegal poppy cultivation, proposing mass tree planting as a method to fight both ecological decline and the regional drug trade. Referencing Mahatma Gandhi, he noted that "Nature has enough for everyone's need, but not for everyone's greed."
The session concluded with an official pledge led by Hopkinson Chiphang, where participants committed to protecting local forests and conserving natural resources. UDWJA President R. Lester Makang closed the program by thanking the various departments and community members who supported the initiative.
