UDP Vice-President Resigns Over Party Support for NPP Candidate

Shillong: United Democratic Party vice-president Robertjune Kharjahrin resigned from the party on Wednesday, including his seat on the Central Executive Committee. He stated that he could no longer support the party following its decision to back National People’s Party candidate James P.K. Sangma in the upcoming Rajya Sabha election.

In a letter to party president Metbah Lyngdoh and general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne, Kharjahrin expressed deep frustration over the leadership's choice. He noted that the decision to support the NPP was made without the formal mandate of the Central Executive Committee, arguing that this action undermines the party’s credibility and confuses the electorate.

Kharjahrin pointed to the inherent contradiction of the UDP running a campaign against the NPP in the Shillong Parliamentary by-election while simultaneously facilitating the party's political growth in the Rajya Sabha. He claimed the move forces a double standard that compromises his political convictions and honesty to voters.

A former leader of a pressure group, Kharjahrin stated that he has always opposed opportunistic politics. He concluded that he could not maintain a leadership role while staying silent on a decision he believes harms the party's integrity. The UDP has not yet provided a formal response regarding his departure.
