Kohima: Health officials in Tuensang gathered at the School of Nursing on July 6 to target animal-to-human disease transmission. More than 70 student nurses and staff met to mark World Zoonoses Day. They focused on stopping outbreaks before they start.
The event centered on the theme "Working Together: Preventing Zoonoses through Community Action." Organizers want locals to lead the fight. Dr. Mohan Sharma, a microbiologist at the District Hospital, told the crowd that residents play a major role in curbing the spread of these illnesses.
The day honors Louis Pasteur. He gave the first rabies vaccine on this date in 1885. Modern researchers now track threats like Scrub typhus, Japanese Encephalitis, and Leptospirosis. Interns from Tinsukia College joined the BSL-2 lab staff to break down how these diseases move through populations.
Dr. Tochi Chang opened the meeting by detailing how the NOHP-PCZ surveillance site functions. Students jumped into the discussion to ask questions and share ideas. The session finished with a vote of thanks from BSL-2 Technician Dekhingridi Sangtam.
