Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha sent the first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit train out of Agartala on Saturday. It marks the first service of its kind in the Northeast. The train runs the route between Agartala and Karimganj. It packs in 3,600 passengers. The new fleet carries CCTV cameras and GPS tech to keep riders safe. It is a big win for the local rail grid.
Saha praised the central government for the push. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Speaking at the ceremony, Saha noted the project will move the region forward. "The first MEMU service in the Northeast," he said. Better links remain the goal.
Sabroom sits next on the list. The state plans to turn the area into a gateway for trade with Bangladesh via the Maitri Setu. Work continues on the Agartala-Akhaura link for cross-border transit. Officials now push for a double rail line from Chandranathpur to Sabroom to ramp up total capacity. The state wants more trains heading to cities like Jammu, Gaya, and Puri soon.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed 18 trains already run through the state. He promised to keep building better public infrastructure for everyone. The government wants to ensure this development reaches all corners of the state.
