Agartala: The Tripura High Court struck down a state decision blocking a female jailor from a promotion. Justice Biswajit Palit ordered the government to redo the review process within three months. Gender does not stop a career.
The petitioner started as a Sub-Jailor in 1997. She fought for years to climb the ranks. She finally earned the Jailor title in 2018 after an earlier court battle. By October 2023, she had served five years and met all requirements for the Deputy Superintendent post. State prison officials denied her move anyway.
The Inspector General of Prisons issued a rejection letter in May 2025. He claimed she was ineligible. The court found this move legally baseless. The recruitment rules show zero distinction between male and female officers.
Her lawyers pointed to Supreme Court precedents regarding equal opportunity. They argued the state stalled her advancement simply because she is a woman. During the proceedings, the court noted that "equal opportunity in public employment is a constitutional guarantee" for all staff. Officials must now judge her record fairly. The court found no negative remarks in her file.
