Tripura Government Outlines Major Road and Flyover Expansion Plans

Agartala: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha told the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Monday that 204.45 kilometres of state roads now meet double-lane standards. Future highway widening depends on land availability and available cash. BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain pushed for faster work and suggested rerouting the Bishramganj-Melaghar-Sonamura-Belonia highway through Bishalgarh, Boxanagar, and Sonamura. Hossain argued the change would boost three constituencies and lower flood risks near the Gomati river embankment. Dr. Saha confirmed the state is reviewing routes including Bishalgarh, Boxanagar, and Amtali-Sabroom for full double-lane upgrades.

CPI(M) MLA Dipankar Sen floated the idea of extending the flyover network and adding metro lines to Udaipur, Teliamura, and the airport. The Chief Minister shut down talk of extending the airport flyover toward Amtali. Instead, the government wants a new 3.985-km double-lane flyover starting at Fire Brigade Chowmuhani. The path moves through CAD Chowmuhani, Shankar Chowmuhani, and Durga Chowmuhani, crossing over Katartal to the Radhanagar Bus Stand with a link to Battala. Officials have started feasibility studies, layouts, and land acquisition planning. The project awaits Finance Department approval.

Dr. Saha mentioned an old, abandoned plan for a 2.905-km flyover from IGM Chowmuhani to Circuit House. That project carried a price tag of ₹593.33 crore, with ₹65 crore already set aside for land. Officials scrapped it because of heavy building congestion. Tipra Motha MLA Sanjay Tripura asked for double-laning on the Karbook-Shantirbazar and Tirthamukh-Gandacherra shortcut routes. The government sent a proposal to the Asian Development Bank for the Shantirbazar to NH-208 route. Other legislators requested updates on the Ambassa-Gandacherra, Gandacherra-Amarpur via Thalchara, and Champaknagar-Udaipur via Jampuijala roads.

The Chief Minister noted that road widening must follow IRC standards based on traffic volume. He added, "The government will continue to consider road widening and flyover projects based on technical feasibility, traffic needs, land availability and funding."
