Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha wants a new strategy for the state. He ordered officials on Thursday to build a long-term water management plan. The goal is to secure drinking water for future generations instead of just patching immediate needs.

Saha reviewed the proposed Gomati River project during a high-level meeting. The plan involves tapping 12 state rivers to supply surface water. It aims to stop the heavy reliance on groundwater, which often suffers from high iron levels. "The initiative should go beyond addressing the capital city's immediate water requirements and serve as part of a broader vision for the state's future water security," Saha said.

The first phase targets supply for Udaipur, Bishramganj, Bishalgarh, and Agartala. Officials rely too heavily on groundwater right now. Rapid urban growth and seasonal shortages make the current system unstable. The project will pull water from the Maharani Barrage in Udaipur. Engineers plan to excavate separate raw water reservoirs to keep the taps running during dry months.
