Torrential Rains Trigger Deadly Landslides in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: Torrential rains have gutted infrastructure in the Potin area of Arunachal Pradesh. Heavy downpours started on June 24, triggering massive landslides that choked major roads and halted travel. Locals claim the current flooding outstrips the damage seen during the 2009 disasters. Lichi Baka, a resident, described the deluge: "It started raining heavily on June 24, almost like water being dumped from the sky. We had experienced something similar back in 2009, but this time it was far worse."

The Potin tri-junction took the hardest hit. Roads to Hoj and Potin are wrecked. Even walking is dangerous. Landslides also hammered the Kimin route. The Border Roads Organisation rushed three to four machines to the site, working until midnight to clear the debris. The district administration, volunteers, and residents are now racing to patch the wreckage. Officials hope to open a single-lane path for cars by Friday or Saturday.

Disaster struck the NIPCO project site too. Reports indicate the storm caused significant damage at the facility. Search efforts are underway, with three to six people still missing in the aftermath.
