Imphal: Thadou Community International has formally rejected what it calls false and misleading narratives regarding the May 13 ambush in Manipur that resulted in the deaths of three Thadou Baptist Association India leaders. The victims, including President Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou, Finance Secretary Rev. Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulun Sitlhou, were killed in an attack that also left five others injured.
The organization claims the victims were specifically targeted for their efforts to promote an independent Thadou identity and religious institutions separate from Kuki groups. According to the statement, the attack occurred in a Kuki militant dominated area between Kotlen and Kotzim villages. TCI alleges that the victims' convoy was selectively targeted after being stopped and registered at militant checkpoints, while other vehicles were allowed to pass unharmed.
TCI representatives accused certain individuals and Kuki groups of spreading propaganda to distort the facts of the event. They emphasized that the Thadou Baptist Association is a distinct body and not affiliated with Kuki church organizations. The group also pointed to historical tensions over language, identity, and church administration, noting that advocates for a distinct Thadou identity have frequently faced intimidation.
The organization highlighted that Rev. Vumthang Sitlhou had recently declined to participate in a Kuki flag hoisting event and was known for opposing violence and illegal drug activities. TCI rejected suggestions that Naga militants were involved in the shooting and called for an impartial investigation by the National Investigation Agency to examine all potential factors behind the tragedy.
