Kohima: A 19-year-old tourist from Guwahati survived a 100-foot fall near the Khiyokesa trekking trail on July 17. The trekker, Hisahetuk Das, tumbled off the path along the Dzükou Valley route in Viswema Village. It was a long drop.
Rescuers pulled Das to safety despite torrential rain, steep cliffs, and thick bamboo growth. Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) President Zasitsolie Beio praised the volunteers from the Viswema Youth Organisation and Z Khel Viswema Youth Organisation for their dangerous work. Virato Naleo, SAYO Vice President and head of the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council, led the coordination of the mission.
The Community Health Centre in Viswema provided the ambulance. Medical staff at the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima handled the emergency care. The local community showed clear expertise in handling the accident under brutal conditions. SAYO now demands that all visitors follow established safety rules.
The group insists that tourists must use registered local guides, especially during the monsoon season or on tough trails. Regarding the incident, SAYO stated: "The successful rescue demonstrated the preparedness and efficiency of the local community in responding to emergencies under challenging weather and terrain."
