Agartala: Tata Trusts and ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited are working to transform the fisheries sector in Tripura by establishing community-based hatchery systems. The project aims to improve fish seed production and provide remote rural farmers with the resources needed for scientific aquaculture.
The initiative is managed by the Centre for Microfinance and Livelihood under Tata Trusts. To date, 14 Fibre Reinforced Plastic hatcheries have been installed across the Dhalai, Khowai, Sepahijala, and Gomati districts. The first phase of this decentralized production model launched this year at South Dhumachara, serving as a primary hub for local fish seed development.
The program emphasizes community involvement to foster rural entrepreneurship. Through technical guidance, the Longtharai Matsaya Samabay Samiti Ltd. has partnered with local farmers to produce fish spawn. In a recent cycle, the project produced 1800 ml of high-quality Rohu spawn, which was distributed to local nursery entrepreneurs for fingerling cultivation. An additional 600 ml of spawn was stocked in a waterbody at Lalcharra to ensure a steady supply of fingerlings for the upcoming season.
By producing high-quality seeds locally, the initiative aims to reduce the state's reliance on external suppliers. Officials and participating farmers anticipate that this cooperative approach will strengthen local fisheries, provide reliable technical support, and create sustainable income opportunities for small-scale and tribal fish farmers across the region.
