Imphal: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has accused the Assam Rifles of using excessive force against peaceful protesters in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. The confrontations occurred on Sunday across New Haven, Finch Corner, and Shokvao village, as local women gathered to oppose the installation of a new military outpost. According to the TNL, the project moved forward without obtaining consent from the relevant village authorities.

The organization reported that soldiers responded to the demonstration by firing automatic weapons, deploying tear gas, and using batons against the crowd. The TNL stated that at least 22 women sustained injuries during the encounters and are currently receiving medical care at the Ukhrul District Hospital, where some remain in critical condition.

The TNL claims that the violence involved participants ranging from students to elderly residents. A statement from the committee specifically alleged that the commanding officer of the 40 Shangshak Battalion participated in the crackdown, stating: "Despicably, at Finch Corner, Colonel Sunil Singh Lunthi, the Commander of the Assam Rifles’ 40 Shangshak Battalion, personally led the lathi charge against the women."

Beyond the injuries reported, the TNL criticized the actions as unprofessional and questioned the oversight of elected representatives in the region. The group expressed frustration over the military's conduct, suggesting the incident contradicts the force's stated reputation as a protector of local communities.
