Imphal: Tamenglong residents gathered at the Youth Hall of Tamenglong Baptist Church on Saturday to observe World Environment Day. Held under the theme Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future, the event was a collaborative effort by The Gaanphiu Mail, The Tamenglong Times, and the Youth Ministry of Tamenglong Baptist Church, with support from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Manipur.
Kachamthai Faiga Gangmei, CEO of the Tamenglong Autonomous District Council, served as the chief guest. He emphasized the collective duty of citizens to protect the planet. During his address, he stated, "While Mother Earth has existed for millions of years and will continue to endure, it remains the responsibility of people to safeguard it." He also advocated for prioritizing horticulture as a sustainable way to boost local income and keep the town clean.
Range Forest Officer Joel Gangmei reported that nearly one lakh saplings have been planted across the district. He encouraged the community to leverage biodiversity through responsible forest management and the adoption of cash crops. He pointed toward "green growth and renewable energy" as essential strategies for long-term economic and environmental health.
The event concluded with a ceremonial plantation drive at the church campus, joined by local youth. Pastor Rev. Lungdapou Riamei reminded the participants of their role as stewards, noting that caring for the environment is a core act of reverence for the Creator.
