Kohima: Suspected militants gunned down two Naga civilians Saturday afternoon in the Kalenjang area of Manipur's Senapati district. Local sources confirmed the victims belong to the Mao Naga community. Their bodies turned up near Taphou Naga village, covered in blood. Officials have yet to provide formal identification of the dead.
This hit follows a separate massacre one day earlier. Four Tangkhul Naga civilians died Friday at Pilong in the Kamjong district near the India-Myanmar border. Police linked that ambush to militants operating out of Myanmar. The United Naga Council just lifted an economic blockade sparked by the Pilong deaths. The group demanded justice and accountability for the victims.
The security situation remains volatile. A delegation of Naga civil society organizations traveled to Assam on Saturday for a tripartite meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Manipur government. They intended to discuss peace-building and the deteriorating law-and-order climate. Amid the tension, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh attended a college event in the Mao area on Saturday. The Chief Minister was at the silver jubilee celebration of Don Bosco College (Autonomous), Maram, which was held under the theme "Heritage to Horizons."
State authorities have not issued a statement. Silence hangs over the police department. Officials say further details are awaited.
