Imphal: The Supreme Court has granted the Manipur government permission to appoint a Director General of Police from outside the state cadre. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued the ruling in response to the volatile security situation currently affecting the region.

The current police chief, Rajiv Singh, is an officer from the Tripura cadre whose tenure concludes on May 31. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta explained to the court that state authorities could not identify a suitable candidate for the position from within the existing Manipur cadre. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati underscored the urgency of the matter, citing the need for a stable transition as the retirement date nears.

The state government filed the plea to seek this flexibility as it manages ongoing ethnic unrest and significant law and order challenges. By allowing an external appointment, the court aims to support the local administration in its efforts to strengthen security management throughout the violence-hit state.
