Itanagar: The Union government appointed Shivaraj as the regular vice chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University on Thursday. The retired Osmania University chemistry professor will serve a five-year term or until he turns 70. This move ends two years of leadership uncertainty at the central institution.
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) pushed for this change for months. They presented a 27-point list of demands to State Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona back in May. AAPSU president Meje Taku welcomed the news after years of temporary, stop-gap management.
"Prolonged in-charge arrangements could not replace a full-time vice chancellor capable of taking academic and administrative decisions," Taku said. He expects the new leader to fix infrastructure issues and boost research standards.
The union now wants the government to look toward Pasighat. Arunachal Pradesh University has lacked a permanent vice chancellor since February 2026. Despite advertising the vacancy in August 2025, the seat remains empty. Taku warned that this leadership vacuum hurts student admissions and long-term academic planning. He wants the government to act before the next school term starts.
