Student killed in Ri-Bhoi road accident as groups demand action against driver

Shillong: An 11-year-old student, Ferdinel Wahlang, died Thursday morning after a speeding pickup truck struck him in Warmawsaw village, Ri-Bhoi district. The Class V student at Brensly Secondary School was hit around 9 am by a vehicle driven by Taidan Makri. Despite being rushed to the Patharkhmah Community Health Centre, he succumbed to his critical injuries shortly after arrival.

Local advocacy groups, including the Khasi Students Union, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, strongly condemned the incident. Leaders from these organizations met with the grieving family and accused the driver of operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. They also raised concerns that the driver may have been operating the pickup without a valid license.

The organizations have urged Patharkhmah police to pursue strict legal action against Makri. Additionally, they are calling for increased police presence and more frequent vehicle inspections across the region to deter reckless driving and prevent future tragedies on local roads.
