Shillong: SPARK Meghalaya recently held district talent events in Nongpoh and Mawkyrwat. These showcases featured 42 student acts from 13 schools. Students displayed skills in music, dance, theatre, fine art, craft, storytelling, beatboxing, and Rubik’s Cube manipulation.
In Ri-Bhoi, local MLA Mayralborn Syiem highlighted the necessity of mental infrastructure in schools. He emphasized that teachers hold a primary role in shaping students. Quoting Khasi poet U SoSo Tham, he stated, “Every person is wise, but without an opportunity, how will he speak?”
The Ri-Bhoi event at the District Library featured acts from seven schools. Judges named Rilin Rani and Iahunlang Ika Shylla as district stars for solo singing. Reality Rani and Jai Jai Syngkli earned selection for group art and craft.
South West Khasi Hills hosted events at Nativity Higher Secondary School in Mawkyrwat. MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar argued that education must prioritize character development over mere instruction. “Education which does not mould character is wholly worthless,” he said.
Judges in the South West Khasi Hills selected Daphishisha L. Marshilong for solo singing, Robinson Nongbri for beatboxing, and Emidaca Nonglang for solo dance. District School Education Officer Ridalin Sohkhlet also gave a special selection to Ibanlambha Syiemlieh for solo singing.
The winning performers will advance to the SPARK State Summit. These events involved a four-member jury in Ri-Bhoi and a three-member panel in South West Khasi Hills. Teachers and principals from participating campuses received recognition for their roles in the program.
