Shillong: South West Garo Hills will shut down on July 16, 2026. The Meghalaya government declared the date a local holiday to mark Garo Labour Corps Day. Offices and schools will lock their doors. All state government offices, magisterial courts, and revenue offices across the district will remain closed for the observance.
The Deputy Commissioner issued the notification following an official directive from October 2025. Authorities expect full compliance from all local departments and educational institutions. This annual tradition hits home. It honors the Garo men of the 69th Labour Corps who helped Allied forces in France during World War I.
The day tracks the return of survivors to Tura in 1918. Work on a permanent memorial at Babupara is almost done. The upcoming 108th anniversary event will take place at the District Auditorium in Tura. Organizers plan a special ceremony to recognize the survivors' families, noting that the event serves to "honour the Garo men of the 69th Labour Corps who served the Allied forces in France during World War I."
