Agartala: A new smart toilet opened Thursday at Durgapur High School in the Ranikhmar area of West Tripura. The Ministry of Science and Technology funded the project. Experts from NBIRT and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, built the facility using ferrocement architecture. It is tough. The design cuts installation costs and embedded energy while keeping high tensile strength.
An automated solar system drives the water pump. Sensors track the overhead reservoir to keep water levels steady. Professor Dr. Shantipada Ghosh Chowdhury, chairman of the energy experts committee for the Department of Science and Technology, led the inauguration ceremony. He pushed for solar adoption to lower carbon emissions. He noted, "It was the responsibility of everyone to ensure that future generations inherited a pollution-free planet."
The facility handles more than just waste. Excess water goes to the school's mid-day meal program and drinking supply. NABARD General Manager Tanushree Bhattacharya urged the student body to maintain the new equipment. NBIRT research scientist Dr. Richik Ghosh Thakur and vice-president Kapil Baran Ghosh joined school committee chairman Baldev Sinha and acting headmaster Mrityunjay Debnath at the event.
