Gangtok: Siliguri Municipal Corporation cleared the way for the long-delayed Suswastha Bhawan Sikkim project. The multi-purpose building will stand in Ward 3 at the Sikkim Nationalized Transport premises. It includes a basement, a ground floor, and 10 stories of usable space.

The facility functions as a bus terminus, guest house, and healthcare center for residents of Sikkim who travel to Siliguri for medical care. A July 3 memorandum from the municipal commissioner granted a building plan exemption under the Government Buildings Act of 1899. This move follows a request from the Sikkim Transport Department submitted last December.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang pushed for this development to help his citizens. He noted the project had stalled for years. "The project had remained pending for a long time," Tamang said while thanking the West Bengal government for its help.

The project must still follow local building codes. Developers have to meet requirements from the West Bengal Municipal Corporation Act of 2006 and the 2007 building rules. Safety remains a priority.
