Gangtok: The Union Law Ministry has officially notified that the Anand Marriage Act will come into effect in Sikkim starting June 1, 2026. This development marks a significant shift for the local Sikh community, as it provides a dedicated legal framework for the registration of marriages solemnized through the traditional Anand Karaj ceremony.

Previously, Sikh couples in the state were required to register their unions under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 to obtain legal recognition. To facilitate the transition, the Sikkim state government has finalized and notified the Sikkim Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2026, which establish the necessary administrative procedures for the new mandate.

This implementation follows a 2012 amendment to the Anand Marriage Act, designed to create specific registration mechanisms for Sikh customs. However, the rollout had faced delays in various states due to a lack of formal rules. The move toward full compliance follows a September 2025 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Amanjit Singh Chadha vs. Union of India, which directed states to rectify these administrative gaps to ensure the rights of the Sikh community are upheld.
