Gangtok: The Union Law Ministry has announced that the Anand Marriage Act will officially take effect in Sikkim starting June 1, 2026. This legislative milestone provides Sikh couples in the state with a distinct legal framework to register marriages solemnized through the traditional Anand Karaj ceremony. The formal notification, released on May 14, follows the state government establishment of the Sikkim Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2026.
For many years, the lack of state level rules compelled numerous Sikh couples to register their unions under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955. This administrative gap persisted despite a 2012 national amendment intended to provide a specialized registration mechanism. The new state regulations directly address this shortfall and reflect a commitment to upholding the legal recognition of Sikh cultural practices.
The policy shift is a direct response to a landmark Supreme Court ruling delivered in September 2025 in the case of Amanjot Singh Chadha versus the Union of India, which mandated that states finalize the necessary infrastructure to implement the law. By aligning with this judicial directive, Sikkim ensures that its residents can access proper legal safeguards for their marriages without compromising their religious traditions. This development is widely viewed as a positive step toward administrative transparency and constitutional equality.
