Gangtok: Sikkim has seen a consistent drop in its suicide rate over the past three years, according to data from the state Health and Family Welfare Department. Officials reported the rate fell from 43.1 per lakh population in 2022 to 40.2 per lakh in 2023, reaching 36.3 per lakh in 2024. This trend represents a 6.7 percent reduction followed by a 9.7 percent decline, marking a positive shift in the state's mental health landscape.

The Health Department credits this progress to a combination of national and local initiatives, including the National Mental Health Programme and Tele-MANAS. These efforts are supported by the Sikkim INSPIRES project and the District Mental Health Programme, which work alongside police, schools, and community organizations to identify vulnerable individuals early.

Key strategies contributing to this improvement include widespread anti-stigma campaigns, professional training for frontline workers, and expanded district-level care. The department emphasized that this trend highlights the importance of intervention, stating, "Early identification and timely referral can save lives."

While officials view the recent data as encouraging, they urged continued public vigilance to maintain this progress. Residents in need of support can contact the Tele-MANAS helpline at 14416 or 1-800-891-4416. Crisis assistance is also available through local helplines at 1800-345-2445 or 03592-202111, with additional professional services provided at STNM Hospital and various district facilities.
