Gangtok: Sikkim wants a dedicated export promotion framework for Himalayan and Northeastern states. Commerce and Industries Minister TT Bhutia took the demand to a Board of Trade meeting in New Delhi on July 3. He pressed Union Minister Piyush Goyal for more breathing room under the Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojana.

Hill states hit walls. Large-scale factories do not fit the geography. Bhutia argued these regions need custom industrial models because land is scarce. He proposed a specific mission component for these areas. It would focus on branding, logistics, and digital commerce. The state wants to boost micro, small, and medium enterprises through better certification and training.

Bhutia touted the state's edge in pharmaceuticals, organic farming, and sustainable tourism. He noted the government remains, "committed to the Prime Minister's vision of boosting manufacturing, connectivity and exports."

The state eyes the border for growth. Officials are pushing to revive the historic Nathu La trade route and restart the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Sikkim also set aside five hectares at Chewa Bhanjyang in West Sikkim. The land will host a border haat and an international trade hub to link local communities with Nepal.
