Gangtok: The Sikkim government is fast-tracking plans to secure the Chungthang to Lachen corridor after recurring landslides repeatedly severed access to North Sikkim. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang ordered a high-level committee to inspect the disaster-prone stretch near Tarum Chu following persistent disruptions that have hampered local economic activity and daily life.

A diverse team of state officials and GREF representatives conducted an on-site assessment on June 2. GREF personnel confirmed that emergency road work involving rock-cutting is currently underway and remains on schedule to restore temporary access.

To prevent future isolation, authorities are considering permanent engineering solutions. Plans include the construction of a 200-metre steel double-arch bridge, with work slated to commence next year to provide reliable all-weather transport. Officials are also evaluating a 186-metre tunnel project designed to bypass the most unstable sections of the mountainside entirely. These initiatives aim to stabilize this vital lifeline and ensure consistent connectivity for the residents and businesses of Lachen.
