Aizawl: Students and Congress party workers flooded the streets of Aizawl this week to protest the recurring NEET paper leak scandals. The unrest began Tuesday when Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee members gathered near Raj Bhavan. They marched to condemn the detention of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other opposition leaders in New Delhi.
Protesters submitted a memorandum to Governor Vijay Kumar Singh for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The document demands the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. It also calls for a parliamentary probe into the exam failures and the dismissal of FIRs filed against student demonstrators in the capital. Rahul Gandhi and his colleagues were released Tuesday night after being held near the Prime Minister’s residence.
By Wednesday, the movement shifted to Vanapa Hall. Hundreds of students from across Mizoram held a massive, peaceful demonstration. Participants chanted slogans including, "Modi ko hatao, Desh Bachao," and "We want freedom from poverty, we want freedom from unemployment." Students also voiced support for activist Sonam Wangchuk and his campaign for student rights.
The protesters demanded strict punishment for those responsible for the leaks. They also requested justice and compensation for families impacted by the academic setbacks. The National Students’ Union of India went further, seeking 1 crore rupees in compensation for victims and a total overhaul of the education system.
Political support flowed in from both the ruling Zoram People’s Movement and the opposition Mizo National Front. ZPM Minister of State B. Lalchhanzova cited the psychological stress and financial loss suffered by Mizo students. The MNF, despite being an NDA ally, backed the protest as a legitimate stand against corruption. The Mizo Zirlai Pawl student organization plans to hold its own follow-up demonstration on Thursday.
