Gangtok: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba met with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Thursday to advocate for the accelerated development of rail infrastructure in the Himalayan state. During the session at Rail Bhawan, Subba emphasized the necessity of expanding connectivity to drive regional tourism, trade, and overall economic growth.
Subba specifically focused on the proposed Rangpo to Ranipool line, urging the Minister to fast-track procedures for the project. Extending the network from Rangpo to Ranipool would place essential rail services significantly closer to the state capital region. Additionally, the MP requested the swift completion of the Final Location Survey for the Melli to Dentam railway, a project intended to improve transit access across West Sikkim.
The state remains the only one in India without an operational rail network, making the ongoing Sivok to Rangpo project a vital milestone for integrating Sikkim into the national grid. Reflecting on the discussions, the MP shared that the Minister listened to his concerns and promised to examine the requests. Subba noted, "The railway projects under implementation represent a historic step for Sikkim and are expected to significantly enhance economic growth, tourism, trade and regional connectivity."
Subba expressed optimism that the Ministry of Railways would continue to back these infrastructure goals. By prioritizing these connections, the government aims to fulfill the long-standing transportation aspirations of the local population.
