Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Electoral Officer Raj Kumar Yadav met with representatives from various political parties on May 18 to discuss the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state's electoral rolls. Following directives from the Election Commission of India, this initiative is being rolled out across 16 states and three Union Territories to ensure the accuracy and credibility of voter data. The revision process is officially scheduled to begin on May 30.
During the meeting, officials detailed the timeline for the exercise. Booth-level officers are set to conduct house-to-house visits through June 28 to distribute and collect enumeration forms. The draft electoral rolls will be published on July 5, kicking off a window for claims and objections that remains open until August 4. Authorities plan to dispose of these submissions by September 2, with the final electoral rolls scheduled for release on September 6.
Yadav described the revision as a highly participatory exercise that requires the cooperation of stakeholders, political parties, and electors to maintain transparency. The primary objective is to identify and remove ineligible voters from the records. For individuals whose names do not appear in the 2002 electoral rolls, which currently serve as a key reference for eligibility, the CEO provided guidance on the specific documentation required for new inclusions. Sikkim currently maintains a voter base of approximately 4.7 lakh people.
To assist with the transition, the Election Commission has introduced the ECINET app. This digital tool allows citizens to search for their electoral details and schedule meetings or calls with their designated booth-level officers. The CEO emphasized that this technology, combined with the efforts of booth-level agents, is essential for a seamless and inclusive revision process.
