Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang joined leaders from across the region in Agartala for the 73rd Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council. The session, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, focused on aligning regional development with the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
Tamang identified organic agriculture, tourism, education, and infrastructure as the primary pillars for Sikkim's future. Representing the High-Level Task Force on Agriculture and Horticulture, he introduced a series of recommendations designed to improve market access and productivity. He also requested that the federal government continue the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region scheme and extend the North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy beyond 2027.
Infrastructure concerns took center stage as the Chief Minister addressed recurring flash floods and persistent connectivity issues along National Highway 10. He pressed for the rapid completion of transport and digital projects, specifically citing the urgent need to restore the Chungthang-Lachen road in North Sikkim.
Reflecting on the collaborative atmosphere of the summit, Tamang noted that the proceedings were productive. "The deliberations reflected a shared commitment towards unlocking the immense potential of the North Eastern Region and advancing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development for the prosperity of our farmers, communities, and future generations," he said. The Chief Minister concluded by thanking the central leadership and neighboring states for their support in organizing the regional gathering.
