Shillong: The Shillong Lok Sabha constituency is set to remain without parliamentary representation for several months as election officials prioritize a statewide voter list update. Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari confirmed that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls will continue until October, effectively pushing any potential by-election beyond the standard six-month legal window.
The seat became vacant following the death of Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon in February. While the Representation of the People Act typically mandates filling parliamentary vacancies within six months, which would target an August deadline, election authorities have prioritized the integrity of the voter database. Tiwari explained that the primary goal is ensuring accuracy across Meghalaya, stating, "The process involves a thorough verification of voter records across Meghalaya and is intended to eliminate discrepancies in the rolls."
This postponement means residents across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region may face a nearly eight-month gap in their representation within the Lower House of Parliament. While the final authority on scheduling rests with the Election Commission of India, current projections suggest the voting process will not begin until the final quarter of the year. This extended timeline offers political parties additional time to prepare for a contest that will now likely occur well after the initial statutory expectation.
