Shillong Inter-State Bus Terminus Faces Urgent Repair Calls After Reopening

Shillong: The Inter-State Bus Terminus in Mawiong is showing signs of severe neglect shortly after resuming operations. Although the facility recently opened following a two-year closure, passengers are now dealing with crumbling infrastructure, peeling paint, and broken seating in the main terminal.

Maintenance issues extend to the washroom facilities, and travelers currently face a lack of food and beverage options because most commercial stalls remain shuttered. Beyond the terminal building, commuters struggle with high travel costs and limited public transport links between the site and Shillong city, often forcing them to rely on bike taxis.

The terminal was previously shuttered due to weight restrictions on the Umiam Dam bridge, which prevented heavy vehicles from reaching the area. Operations shifted to a temporary site near Umiam Lake for two years, causing widespread disruption. The bus terminus was finally able to restart services this week after the completion of a new bypass road.

State government officials have acknowledged the poor condition of the site. They stated that the facility will undergo renovations to address these infrastructure gaps now that the terminal is fully operational again.
