Imphal: Security forces used tear gas and lathi charges on Monday to disperse a crowd protesting the admission of three injured Kuki men to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal. The facility, which serves as a premier healthcare provider in Manipur, saw a large gathering of demonstrators aiming to block the entry of the patients.

The three individuals, identified as 18-year-olds Genlenmang Vaiphei and Paogoulal Chongloi, alongside 20-year-old Lunliandan Vaiphei, were transported to the hospital by central security forces. They had sustained injuries during a reported gun firing incident earlier that morning at Leilon Munlui. Local frustration has been mounting following the recent killings of six Naga men, an event attributed to suspected Kuki militants.

The arrival of the injured men exacerbated existing tensions, drawing a crowd that disrupted operations and triggered panic among other patients at the hospital. Personnel from the Assam Rifles and the Rapid Action Force intervened to clear the area. Officials noted the chaotic nature of the event, stating, "The confrontation and the protest scene at the hospital premises created panic and fear for other patients."

Authorities reported no injuries resulting from the dispersal tactics used by security forces. A heavy security presence remains at the medical facility to maintain order as the situation continues to evolve.
