Kohima: Veteran statesman Dr. S.C. Jamir wants the youth to step up. On the eve of his 95th birthday, the former Nagaland governor and chief minister urged the younger generation to lead the state toward unity. Jamir spent decades in public life. He started his political path in 1958 as the joint secretary of the Naga People’s Convention after choosing a law degree over theology studies at Allahabad.

He sees a state fractured by internal divisions. Jamir noted that society once moved as one person with a single chorus for peace. Today, he views the emergence of numerous groups as a source of trouble rather than relief. He believes the shared Naga identity is fading. People have forgotten how to act as one, he said. "It is a pity that the Naga people have learned only to divide among themselves. And that is the saddest spectacle which I have been observing during this period," Jamir remarked.

The elder statesman remains confident in the potential of the youth. He told them they are superior to their elders and must forge a state that earns the envy of the world. Success requires grit. Jamir insisted that true public service demands unwavering commitment despite the shifting weather of politics. He now calls for a return to the collective spirit of harmony to bring prosperity back to the region.
