Guwahati: Locals in Sivasagar district say the 18-km road connecting to the UNESCO-listed Charaideo Maidams is a disaster. Work began two years ago, but the route remains a minefield of potholes and open trenches. The project falls under the Asom Mala scheme with a budget of Rs 121 crore.
Deadlines are sliding. The contractor, Shiva Harlalka, had until March 2025 to finish the job. Residents claim the work happens in sloppy patches, leaving the road dangerous for commuters and tourists alike. Harlalka also faces heat for his work on the Jhanji-Dimow four-lane road and the historic Dhodar Ali, both of which faced similar criticism.
Public frustration is boiling over. The Jatiya Sangrami Sena, Assam, threatened a new wave of protests to force a resolution. The group is demanding immediate results. Locals urged the Public Works Department to step in and fix the mess. They want quality, not excuses. Residents questioned why officials have allowed the contractor to continue despite the clear pattern of delays. "The project is being executed under the Asom Mala scheme, for which Rs 121 crore was sanctioned," noted critics pushing for PWD intervention.
